Local know-how

Pulling boxes at Garden City without appointments

The Georgia Ports Authority runs Garden City itself, and it uses no truck appointments. You pull a PIN for each container and key it in at the gate pedestal with your plate and booking or EDO number. Every tractor needs an RFID tag, and five or more port visits a year means a TWIC plus a GPA badge.

Weekday gates open at 6:00 AM, with dry pickups cut off at 4:30 PM and drop-offs at 5:00 PM. On Saturday only Gate 4 runs, dry boxes only, 8:00 AM to noon. Since July 2026 the Brampton Road Connector finishes a truck beltway from the port to I-516, I-16 and I-95, keeping port trucks off neighborhood streets.

Deliveries fan out through Pooler and Port Wentworth into Bryan and Effingham counties, where the Hyundai Metaplant sits on I-16 in Ellabell. Georgia lets a sealed 40-foot international box run at 100,000 lb on five axles under a GDOT permit, as long as you can show the international bill of lading.

Local FAQ

Savannah owner operator questions

Which port terminals will I run from Pooler?

Mostly Garden City Terminal, the Georgia Ports Authority's main container terminal, about 10 miles from Eagle's yard at 165 Distribution Drive. You will also see Ocean Terminal, east of Garden City near downtown Savannah. GPA is rebuilding it as a container-only terminal, with yard work running through 2028.

Are there owner operator openings near Savannah right now?

Yes. 3 postings are live within about 160 miles of the Savannah terminal as of October 30, 2026: Savannah (about 10 miles), Dublin (about 100 miles) and Macon (about 147 miles). Distances are straight-line miles; a recruiter confirms which yard you would run from and the hiring area for your ZIP code.

Do I need a TWIC to pull boxes at Garden City?

For port work, yes. GPA requires a TWIC enrolled in its access system for unescorted entry at Gates 3, 4 and 8, plus a GPA-issued badge if you make five or more visits a year. Every tractor also needs an RFID tag.

How does rail work at the Port of Savannah?

Mason Mega Rail sits inside Garden City Terminal and is served by CSX and Norfolk Southern. Because the yard is on-dock, many rail boxes move ship to train without a street dray. Double-stack trains run from there to markets such as Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago and Memphis.

Where does Savannah port freight deliver?

Freight runs across the warehouse belt from Garden City through Pooler and Port Wentworth into Bryan and Effingham counties. If Florida is closer to home, look at owner operator jobs in Jacksonville, FL.

How much do owner operators make in Savannah?

The range is the same at every Eagle terminal: $3,000–$5,000 gross per week, paid weekly. Gross means revenue before your truck expenses, so build your own budget from that number.

What comes with leasing on at the Savannah terminal?

You get a fuel card with nationwide discounts, plate, registration and IFTA programs, an ELD, dash cameras and a mobile dispatch app. Here is the full lease-on package. Weighing a move north? Compare Norfolk, VA owner operator jobs.
