Local know-how
Working Hampton Roads from South Military Highway
NIT in Norfolk and VIG in Portsmouth are both run by Virginia International Terminals, each about 15–20 miles from the Chesapeake yard. On weekdays VIG opens at 5:00 AM and NIT at 7:00 AM, both close at 6:00 PM, and PRO-PASS reservations are mandatory until 2:00 PM. Chassis come from the port-owned Hampton Roads Chassis Pool (HRCP II).
Tunnels shape every route here. The I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion opened new westbound lanes in Norfolk in July 2026 and is due for substantial completion in spring 2027. Certain hazmat classes are barred from the HRBT, the Monitor-Merrimac on I-664, and the Downtown and Midtown tunnels.
Most boxes land close by. DCs cluster at Greenbrier Commerce Center in Chesapeake and along the Route 58 and Route 460 corridor through Suffolk and Isle of Wight County, home to a Target upstream DC and Port 460 Logistics Center. Some Richmond freight skips I-64 on the 64 Express barge to Richmond Marine Terminal.

Local FAQ
Norfolk owner operator questions
Which terminals do Chesapeake drivers work?
Norfolk International Terminals in Norfolk and Virginia International Gateway in Portsmouth, both operated by Virginia International Terminals. Each has on-dock rail for Norfolk Southern and CSX, so rail boxes come off the same terminals. Both sit roughly 15 to 20 miles from Eagle's yard on South Military Highway.
Are there owner operator openings near Norfolk right now?
Yes. 6 postings are live within about 160 miles of the Norfolk terminal as of October 30, 2026: Norfolk, Elizabeth City, NC (about 33 miles), Emporia (about 69 miles), Richmond (about 82 miles), Rocky Mount, NC (about 101 miles) and South Hill (about 101 miles). Distances are straight-line miles; a recruiter confirms which yard you would run from and the hiring area for your ZIP code.
Do I need a TWIC for NIT and VIG?
Yes, at both container terminals. The carrier also registers with the Port of Virginia, the truck carries a PRO-PASS RFID tag linked to its plate, and you book a PRO-PASS reservation for mandatory hours. Slots are hourly, open 48 hours ahead, with 30 minutes of grace either side.
Does the Port of Virginia have a clean truck rule?
No truck-age ban at the gates is on record. Instead, the port's voluntary Green Operator program, running since 2006, gives rebates to replace older drayage trucks serving the port. Its GO-Zero track funds zero- and near-zero-emission trucks.
Can I haul overweight sealed boxes out of Hampton Roads?
Under Va. Code § 46.2-1141, Virginia DMV can permit overweight sealed seagoing containers moving to or from a seaport, as long as the contents are unchanged. You apply through DMV Hauling Permits before the move.
How much do owner operators make out of Chesapeake?
Eagle owner operators gross $3,000–$5,000 a week, paid weekly. That range applies across the company, not just Chesapeake, and it is gross revenue before fuel, insurance and truck payments.
What support comes with leasing on in Chesapeake?
A fuel card with nationwide discounts, low-cost insurance, plate and IFTA programs, an ELD, dash cameras and a dispatch app. Read what leasing on with Eagle includes. If the Shenandoah Valley suits you better, compare owner operator jobs in Winchester, VA.
