Local know-how
Crossing the Columbia to Portland's ramps
Every Portland facility sits across the I-5 Interstate Bridge, ranked the worst truck bottleneck in Oregon and Washington, with more than 13,500 trucks a day in 2019. BNSF Portland Intermodal on NW Yeon is about 10 miles from the yard. UP's Brooklyn Yard on SE Holgate is about 13 miles, and both ramps are open 24/7.
The Oregon Container Terminal, the former Terminal 6 at 7201 N Marine Dr, is about 8 miles away. Harbor Industrial Services has run it since January 1, 2026, and as of early 2026 SM Line was its regular ocean carrier, after years of gaps in service. Gates run weekdays 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and you need a TWIC.
Oregon charges a weight-mile tax on trucks over 26,000 lb in place of the diesel fuel tax. Under HB 2007, heavy diesels of model year 2006 or older owned in Multnomah, Clackamas or Washington County can no longer be titled, and from 2029 cannot be registered. A truck owned in Clark County, WA falls outside those counties.

Local FAQ
Portland owner operator questions
Where is Eagle's Portland-area terminal?
At 2501 West Fourth Plain Blvd in Vancouver, WA. The Port of Vancouver USA is next door, but it handles bulk, autos and project cargo, not containers. Your boxes come from the Portland rail ramps and the Oregon Container Terminal across the Columbia.
Are there owner operator openings near Portland right now?
Yes. 4 postings are live within about 160 miles of the Portland terminal as of October 30, 2026: Portland, Longview, WA (about 36 miles), Salem (about 51 miles) and Eugene (about 111 miles). Distances are straight-line miles; a recruiter confirms which yard you would run from and the hiring area for your ZIP code.
Which rail yards will I run in Portland?
Union Pacific's Brooklyn Yard at 1862 SE Holgate Blvd and BNSF's Portland Intermodal Facility at 3930 NW Yeon. Both are open 24/7. BNSF lists no intermodal facility in Vancouver, WA, so every rail move crosses the river.
How does the Oregon Container Terminal work for truckers?
Gates run Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and trucks inside by 4:00 PM are processed until 5:00 PM. Transactions are paperless at OCR pedestals. Imports release only after freight and customs clearance, and empties must be clean with old hazmat placards removed.
Does Oregon's clean diesel law affect my truck?
It depends on where the owner lives. HB 2007 covers owners in Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties, where 2006-and-older heavy diesels cannot be titled since 2025 and cannot be registered from 2029. A Clark County, WA owner is outside those counties.
How much do Portland-area owner operators make?
Eagle owner operators gross $3,000–$5,000 a week. That range applies across the company rather than to Portland alone, and it is gross before fuel, Oregon weight-mile tax and your other truck costs.
What support do I get when I lease on in Vancouver?
A fuel card with nationwide discounts, plate and IFTA programs, low-cost insurance, an ELD, dash cameras and a mobile dispatching app. Here is what leasing on with Eagle includes.
